The organisation was established in April 2011 following the merger of the Whittington Hospital NHS Trust with NHS Islington and NHS Haringey community health services. It has an income of £281m and more than 4,000 staff delivering care across North London in The Whittington Hospital and from 30 locations in Islington and Haringey.

The Challenge

Whittington Health wanted to expand its voice infrastructure to include a wireless communications solution. The organisation wanted its staff to be able to communicate remotely to ensure improved team working and better care for its patients. In particular, it’s IT Support, and Estates and Facilities mobile teams, and Clinical Leads wanted to be able to communicate more effectively whilst at different locations across its boroughs to ensure they were providing the best service to their respective customers and patients.

The Solution

Elite chose to supply Whittington with a resilient Mitel MiVoice Business network with most of the elements hosted within the Whittington Hospital NHS Trust VMware infrastructure. The voice cluster includes resilient vMCD controllers, centralised licensing and MCD Media Gateways providing connectivity to the Whittington Hospital ISDX infrastructure. We also deployed Mitel Wi-Fi handsets across the network.

The Result

The Mitel Business network has simplified the organisation’s business communications, increased flexibility of communications and helped increase productivity. The solution has given mobile employees access to the same ‘inoffice’ communications that they would have had at their desks. Being able to use a single identity, phone number, voice mailbox and extension means staff can work from anywhere while on-the-go. In addition, Whittington can now add users whenever it needs to as MiVoice Business enables you to scale to service from 5 users up to 130,000 users.

We have thousands of handsets deployed to our clinical and support staff teams who could be working anywhere across multiple London boroughs in acute hospitals, shared and hosted buildings and in the community. Good mobile communications are therefore critical to our staff and patients. Elite’s solution is reliable and effective; it has improved our wireless communications and resulted in better team working as our staff can now communicate more simply with colleagues who are on the move or at one of our different locations.
