The School’s multidisciplinary expertise includes clinicians, epidemiologists, statisticians, social scientists, molecular biologists and immunologists, who work with partners worldwide to support the development of teaching and research capacity.
The School has an annual research income of more than £140 million and is one of the highest-rated research institutions in the UK. Its education provision has expanded to more than 1,000 London-based master’s and research students; 3,000 distance learning, postgraduate students, and 1,000 students completing short continuous professional development courses, as well as thousands of online course students.
As one of the world’s leading universities for collaborative research, The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine has projects and partnerships in over 100 countries. It needs to provide robust voice services that are accessible worldwide and offer the best levels of service available to its staff, experts and students so they can communicate and work without interruption. The voice services also needed to be controlled centrally from Keppel Street, London.
Elite Group installed a resilient Mitel MiVoice Business infrastructure on the School’s VMware infrastructure. This includes a Mitel Border Gateway providing teleworker functionality. Staff were given Mitel handsets so they can talk to one another across locations and countries.
MiVoice Business gives users access to the same ‘inoffice’ functionality even when they’re away from their desks. Being able to use a single identity, phone number, voice mailbox and extension means users can work from anywhere – allowing flexible and remote working without experiencing escalating mobility costs.
MiVoice Business also contains an integrated suite of collaboration features, making it easier for staff to work together across multiple offices and countries. By equipping staff with everything they need to connect with colleagues, customers and partners, it increases productivity and generates higher levels of user satisfaction and faster resolution processes.
MiVoice Border Gateway is a platform for the secure deployment of multiple services in a variety of network configurations. Using the Teleworker function allows remote MiNET and SIP access (“teleworker”) for IP phones on MiVoice Business platforms.
The School now has a global voice system that provides a robust means of communication for its users, which is managed centrally from London. The teleworker functionality has allowed the School to deploy remote IP phones globally, even in remote locations in Africa and South America which have allowed its staff, experts and students to communicate effectively and work without interruption. The School was at the forefront of efforts to combat the Ebola outbreak in 2015, and the Mitel infrastructure was vital to providing voice services. The new system and use of the School’s Mitel handsets by staff, rather than their handsets, has also made it easier to cross charge and control the School’s communications budget.
In 2014 the School was able to deploy Mitel hardware to Sierra Leone as part of our coordinated response to the Ebola outbreak. From this point on Mitel Teleworker became invaluable to us as a solution which could provide our remote users with reliable and cost-effective telephony links back to our sites in London.
